Virtual Worlds and mobile internet has always been a big wildcard. Both are undeniably growing en enjoying plenty of interest from corporations with the power to make a change. This is why on the 26th of February some big shots in the mobile industry (Nokia amongst others) will get together with investors, advertisers and developers at the first the first annual Virtual Worlds Go Mobile Forum.
“Keynote speaker Anders Nancke-Krogh, Head of Product Development for Point&Find at Nokia, will discuss how innovations used today will enable virtual worlds to go mobile tomorrow. Joe Jasin, Vice President of Corporate Development for SK Telecom, will then explore the demand for virtual worlds and international trends in social Internet interactivity”
However, mobile and Virtual Worlds are not entirely new to each other- The Sulake corporation (developers of Habbo Hotel) already have a small mobile ‘virtual world’ called Mini Friday, and Ironstar Helsinki - another Finnish company - recently launched ‘Moi Pal‘, a mix of Facebook, tamagotchi and Virtual Worlds in a mobile phone.
While we are on the topic of Virtual worlds and mobile, here is one brand spanking new video of some clever guys at Comverse. They managed to get Second Life running on an iPhone… or did they?
Actually they didn’t. It’s just streaming Safari-friendly video of your SL session. The user is able to send commands back in the other direction through the touch interface which gets processed elsewhere. That’s why it’s this sluggish at the moment, because you’re one step removed. Obviously this technique isn’t ready yet, and I fail to see how this would really contribute to my life at this point, but as people find applications for Virtual Worlds, so will the demand for connectivity to these applications.
