Daniel Terdiman, a senior writer for CNet, has published a new book by the name of The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Second Life: Making Money in the Metaverse. A book that, as the title suggests, talks about ways to make a living of your virtual business. According to Terdiman in an interview with Wired Magazine he claims that:
“I talked to at least a couple dozen people, probably more, for the book who are earning full-time livings with their Second Life businesses. Still, the truth is that only the cream of the crop is going to make that kind of money. Most people who do this successfully are going to find that it’s not quite that lucrative. But, there is still money to be made.”
Though this is a pretty safe statement to make the interesting thing is how he focuses on the in-world economy. The creation and selling of content rather then the cross-media entrepreneurship the main stream media often talks about. And even when the media writes about the in-word economy the focus is often on how easy it seems to get paid for doing ‘virtually nothing’. In Daniels words:
“I want the overriding message of my book to be that it’s not easy. It’s hard. It has to be treated like you would treat starting a business in the real world. You have to work hard at it. And be committed. And that may well not be the message that is spread in the media.”
I ordered the book today but Amazon being its sluggish self again it will be on my doormat between the 11th and 24th of December…
