Jenna Jameson in Second Life

Celebrity Pornstar Jenna Jameson will be making a grand appearance in Second Life. Click here (NSFW) or here (SFW) if you don’t know who Jenna Jameson is (or want to pretend you don’t). Her label ‘Club Jenna’ will bring real life adult material into Second Life, a 3d platform to be part of her 2d website. Thank you Frank of ‘Into the vortex‘ for pointing this one out to me.

Now I hear you think - Adult entertainment in Second Life, what’s the news? Well first of all I think it was surprising to see the absence of real ‘adult’ brands in Virtual Worlds. Second Life has been dominated by in world, adult entertainment companies such as Strokerz (Sexgen) and Xcite. But apart from the occasional self employed webcam ‘escort’ and some pirated movies there has been very little news, or content of actual adult material which wasn’t based on roleplay cybersex.

Playboy in Second LifeI intentionally skipped ‘Playboy‘ as it’s ironic to see one of the most ‘parent approved’ islands in Second Life is the sim of the adult lifestyle magazine. They sell nothing even remotely connected to pornographic material, just some t-shirts and jewelery with their logo. Their island houses a stage, a store, an ‘exclusive lounge’ and a surf resort. I am really lost on what Playboy is trying to tell us here, but it certainly isn’t ’sex sells’…

Jenna’s determination

Club Jenna in Second LifeThe second point that struck me as interesting about Jenna’s Virtual World Venture is the fact they seem determined to make it work. They jumped in with a total of 7 simulators/islands, comparable to 455 square km or 112 acres in the real world. The new ‘porn empire’ hasn’t opened it’s doors yet, but I am guessing it won’t be long until Club Jenna sees a return on their investments, and other labels will follow.

Which brings us to another thing to look out for. What happens to Second Life if Club Jenna becomes a success? Linden Labs is already fighting this ‘adult playground’ image Second Life has been building over the past years. With 7 simulators close to being fully developed Club Jenna is hardly flying under the radar. Therefor I am assuming they must have been given some sort of approval. Will Second Life be getting closer to that ‘Adult Playground’ or will a porn empire hardly be shocking with the controversy of last year? Either way it will be interesting to see how Club Jenna will be doing, the adult industry has a reputation of spotting opportunities in new technology way ahead of the curve

  1. Good article but I think there is a little more porn in second life already. Fact remains that it hasn’t been adopted as widely as you’d think, unlike most other internet initiatives. This surprised me too. Perhaps there is more demand for the interactive ‘cybersex’ over the static pictures and video’s these website usually bring.

  2. Thanks for Commenting Nevamonde,

I don’t think its a matter of the ‘original adult industry’ being afraid of this 3d interactive competition as opposed to the traditional ways of selling porn. If anything they would think of it as a way of innovating their ‘product’ yet again. With the number of visitors adult sites usually receive they might have considered SL just too insignificant to invest - up to now apparently.

  3. I doubt that “Fact remains that it hasn’t been adopted as widely as you’d think, unlike most other internet initiatives”covers the whole deal. There’s sex in SL, and yay, it’s no big organised porn industry there (fortunately), but the industry has adapted the Virtual Worlds.

There are rumours that Electric Sheep is working on an SL based porn grid, and Ren Reynolds names a few dedicated adult worlds on the Terran Nova blog (like 3FeelOnline, Heavenly Bodies, Jewel of Indra, Naughty America, Rapture Online (coming soon), Red Light Center, Seducity, Sociolotron and Virtual Ibiza)

  4. True, but these worlds focus on 3D, avatar based, adult interaction (I can honestly say I don’t know all of them, so in one of those ‘upcoming’ worlds there might be one that doesn’t focus on ‘avatar on avatar’ sex). There is no shortage of ‘cyber’ in Second Life already. The thing I thought was interesting, is how porn industries haven’t made ‘Streaming movie pay per view’ theatres, or simple ‘galleries’ of ‘RL’ porn. Virtual sex seems to be selling ‘very well’ - but I haven’t heard anything of a well run ‘real life adult site’ in Virtual Worlds.

There might be good reason for that - perhaps its hard to get people to pay for this content in Second Life for example, or perhaps there is simply no advantage in offering this adult content in VW’s - but that’s what I ment when I said it will be interesting to see what Club Jenna will do to get a ROI on these 7 or 8 sims.
