Just when I was wondering what’s taking 3D goggles with head tracking so long to become a mainstream product (I mean, how much would 2 mobile phone screens, 2 webcams and 2 infra red lights mounted on a pair of goggles cost these days?), I noticed this peculiar post on Phones Review.co.uk. Apparently KPCB’s iFund launched a program claiming to have $100,000,000 in funds for “market-changing ideas and products that extend the revolutionary new iPhone and iPod touch platform”. One of these ground breaking ideas by ‘Box Fab’ is a rather interesting one for the residents of Virtual Worlds: “a virtual reality head-mount which the iPhone clips into instantly become a networked, head-tracked, virtual worlds viewer.”
Some scepticism is certainly called for. The formula seems quite easy - combine 2 of the hot factors in internet-land (iPhone and Virtual Reality) and you have instant attention. The fact its a bit hard to manipulate the iPhones touch display when its mounted on your forehead and how Virtual Worlds don’t even run properly on the phone yet (not to mention the ’stereo 3D client’) don’t help either. Either way, someone out there should really get working on the idea of voice+tracking+goggle monitors soon - what’s keeping you!
