It’s often said 2D has advantages over 3D just as 3D has advantages over 2D. While 2D allows good overviews, particularly with text (a 2D medium per definition) and area/location based overviews (maps) it also has its limitations. 3D gives more of a feeling of presence, and has advantages due to a better relation with the real world around us, making it easy to recognise and manipulate ‘real’ objects.
What the video below shows, is there is a ‘best of both worlds’ solution. Though complicated and not exactly applicable for everything, it does do a great job of taking the best out of 2D, and combine it with the best out of 3D:
I thought it was quite an inspirational technology, highlighting how 2D and 3D don’t have to be mutually exclusive. The advantages when dealing with information are plenty, creating one, seamless environment to optimally display your data without making concessions either way. I wonder if technology will advance enough in the next 5 years to see more of these seamless integrated 2D and 3D applications for non-gaming purposes. for more future technologies in interfacing with data visit readwriteweb.com’s overview.

I can’t tell yet. I’m on my work machine - and just got a “Red Screen of Death” aka “You’ve Been Busted” message from the corporate internet access monitor. I will try this evening.
